Acoustics student Salford University
I applied for a placement with Sandy Brown because I wanted to gain experience as an acoustic engineer with one of the leading consultancies in the UK. The company had been recommended by students who had previously been on placement with Sandy Brown and by my lecturers.
From my first day I felt welcomed and included as part of the team. The atmosphere in the office is professional but friendly and everyone gets on really well with each other.
I was amazed at how quickly I was being given the opportunity to work on real jobs and get involved in high profile projects. Right from the start I was given my own responsibilities, such as writing survey reports and performing plant noise assessments for clients. I worked on a large variety of projects over my time with Sandy Brown, which I enjoyed as it meant every day was different. Projects I worked on varied from performing noise surveys for small schools and office buildings to modelling large theatres and concert halls.
Most of my time was spent in the office, however, I did get to travel for jobs and get involved in site work across the north of England and also in North Wales.
Support is always readily available at Sandy Brown. Colleagues are always willing to help out on anything you don’t understand or lend their expertise. Feedback is given on all reports and memos, which helps improve business writing skills. Each colleague also has a training sheet which documents your progression in key skills. This is filled in on a regular basis which helps you to understand weak areas which are in need of improvement and keep on top of how you are progressing.
Sandy Brown is definitely a company that I would recommend to students looking at getting experience as an acoustic consultant. The jobs are interesting and varied, the staff are friendly and helpful and skills are developed in a wide range of areas that a University course just can’t teach.
