Summary

Sandy Brown was commissioned to provide acoustic design advice on a new build state-of-the-art sports centre complex at the University of Stirling from 2017 at the design stages through to completion in 2020.

Key spaces included:

  • A fully glazed double height central atrium containing a reception and cafe space
  • A central cylindrical drum inside the atrium containing two ground floor multi-purpose
studios and a fitness suite at first floor level
  • A strength and conditioning weightlifting suite at lower ground level
  • Three sports halls

Key design considerations

Key acoustic considerations included:

  • Control of reverberation in the central atrium by the provision of sound absorbing treatment to the drum
  • Control of reverberation in the fitness suite
  • Control of airborne and structure borne noise and vibration transfer from the fitness suite down to the studio spaces below to facilitate quiet uses in the studios
  • Control of structure borne noise and vibration transfer due to heavy weightlifting in the strength and conditioning suite.
