Project Summary

1 Soho Place is situated above Tottenham Court Road and Crossrail stations and occupies a gateway position at the junction of Oxford Street and Charing Cross Road. It is an ideal location for Apollo to locate 81,000 sq ft of office space over the first to fourth floors of this new 10 storey building.

The fit-out includes meeting rooms with full audio and visual conferencing ability, two gym studios, multipurpose event space, and on-site kitchen with associated café as well as cellular offices, focus rooms, open plan working space, reception, and ancillary welfare spaces.

The brief was to deliver a high quality acoustic design which achieved the requirements of BREEAM as well as client driven aspirations for excellent room acoustics within conference spaces and significant uplifts to the base-build sound insulation to control and vibration from the gym studios.

Detailed design

Sandy Brown provided advice on all aspects of the design including architectural acoustics, building services noise & vibration control, and worked closely with the AV consultant to deliver ideal conditions for conference facilities.

A very high level of sound insulation of Dw 60 dB was achieved between the gym studios and client facing meeting rooms through the use of twin stud partitions and a bespoke designed overcladding treatment to facade mullion systems.

Specialist floor treatments allow the gyms studios to be used without the risk of excessive impact transfer to neighbouring spaces. An acoustic mass barrier ceiling on ant-vibration hangers will control airborne sound transfer to offices on the floor above.

Extensive assessments of the building services design were carried out to ensure that low background noise levels for critical spaces were achieved and crosstalk was suitably controlled, with sound masking delivered to ensure privacy targets can be maintained.

Acoustically absorbent finishes were specified throughout, with exceptional room acoustic conditions achieved within audio enabled spaces for optimal speech intelligibility.
