Project summary

The new £40m development in Bearsden provides combined leisure and adult day care facilities in one building.

The leisure centre includes a swimming pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a gym, a games hall, various fitness studios, and a cafe. A separate sports dome is to be provided in a future phase. The day care centre is designed for use for those living with dementia, autism, and physical disabilities. The accommodation includes music, drama, and dance class spaces, and a training kitchen. The project was delivered under a Scape Framework led by McLaughlin & Harvey.

Detailed design

We provided a full scope of service, advising on the acoustic design from RIBA Stage 3 through until completion. The key issues included the control of activity noise and plant noise breakout to nearby dwellings, the provision of sound insulation between spaces, and the control of reverberation.
The large volume games hall achieved a suitably low reverberation time using a sound absorbing perforated roof liner, and efficient sound absorbing wall panels around the perimeter of the space.
The main reception and cafe space (pictured) utilises a combination of sound absorbing timber ceiling and wall treatments, and sound absorbing mineral fibre ceiling tiles to control reverberation and reverberant noise.
